CRISTINA VALDÉS (piano) and MARIA MÄNNISTÖ (soprano) play the music of WAYNE HORVITZ

Valdes and Mannisto will be presenting works for solo piano and piano and soprano voice including “For Piano, Alone , In Four Parts”, and songs from “Smokestack Arias”, “The Heartsong of Charging Elk” and “Joe Hill”.

Composer, Pianist and Electronic musician Wayne Horvitz is the recipient of numerous awards and commissions including the American Prize for orchestral composition, the 2016 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, and 3 MAP grants. In addition to his many ensembles, he has created works for the Seattle Symphony, Nocco, The New York Composers Orchestra, Kronos, and the Vienna Radio Orchestra among others. Notable collaborators include Butch Morris, Robin Holcomb, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Reggie Watts, Gus Van Sant, and Fontella Bass.

Cristina Valdés is known for presenting innovative concerts with repertoire ranging from Bach to Xenakis. She has performed across four continents and in a multitude of venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Recital Hall, Jordan Hall and the Kennedy Center. An avid chamber musician, Valdés has toured extensively with the Bang On a Can “All Stars” and performed with the Seattle Symphony, Mabou Mines Theater Company, Parsons Dance Company, Antares and Trio V. Her festival appearances include the Singapore Arts Festival, Brisbane Arts Festival, Foro Internacional de Musica Nueva in Mexico City, New Music in Miami Festival, Festival of Arts and Ideas and the Festival of Contemporary Music in El Salvador, among others. She can be heard on several recordings on the Newport Classics, Albany and Innova labels.

Finnish-American soprano Maria Männistö  delights in exploring the vast range of human expression through music, be it classical repertoire, demanding contemporary works, Scandinavian folk singing, or her own compositions. She has premiered numerous works, including Wayne Horvitz’ Smokestack Arias at ACT Theatre and Garrett Fisher’s Kocho at the Galapagos Art Space in New York. As soloist, she has appeared with Seattle Symphony, Pacific Northwest Ballet, EOS Kammeroper Köln, Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, and Seattle Modern Orchestra.
